YouTube Me Dance 2011 and 2012

In November 2013, YouTube Me Dance was awarded ‘Outstanding Achievement in Regional and/or Community Dance’ at the WA Dance Awards. To the team of amazing individuals and organisations who where part of this initiative – THANK YOU!

1. YouTube Me Dance 2011

A youth engagement hip hop dance pilot project delivered in Broome, WA. High-profile artist, Jason Bird, visited Broome and conducted workshops with local young people for a week. During the following three weeks, local artists continued to work with the young participants in preparation for Jason’s return and the final party and performance at the Broome Youth Support Group. Over 140 participants were invovled in the workshops – of which approximately 50 performed at the final party. View an ABC Kimberley video story for more information.

2. YouTube Me Dance 2012

A youth engagement hip hop dance program delivered in Broome, Derby and the Dampier Peninsula building on the successes of YTMD2011. Conducted over a longer period of time, and involving two lead artists, YTMD2012 grew exponentially. In Broome, workshops were conducted in both high schools, all four primary schools, at the Broome Youth Support Group and at 2bSix on Pembroke. In Derby, workshops were conducted in the High School and at the Derby Youth Centre. Up the Dampier Peninsula workshops were conducted in One Arm Point, Beagle Bay and Lombadina/Djarindjin remote communities.

In Broome, over 500 participants were involved in the workshops with a eager and energetic 75 participants that  performed together at the final show. In Derby, 300 participants were involved in the workshops with approximately 30 participants performed at the final party.
